2.1 Overview The methodology used in collecting and analyzing the data of this research will be described. The secondary data were collected to guide and support the study, and the primary data were collected to meet the objectives. Moreover, research and sample design, pilot test, data analysis methods will be described in the following. 2.2 Secondary Data Collection The study specifically investigates the problems caused by Chinese tourists. Both exploratory research and descriptive research were applied. The rising popularity of survey research and the growing number of Internet users in the 1990 led quite naturally to increased use of the Internet to deliver surveys to collect responses (Balch, 2007). With a number of anti and support parallel traders or Individual Visit Scheme group were formed in social media. Internet Survey is the best way to reach the target respondents. A questionnaires in English and Traditional Chinese with 36 questions were sent to Facebook, Line and Forum as well as hand distribution. In this study, the perception of Hong Kong resident towards Chinese tourists, especially the problems caused by Chinese tourists in the consideration of the Hong Kong resident. And the demographic data of the Chinese tourists which the respondents were encounter with 63 were collected. 2.4 Questionnaire Design In this survey, nearly all the questions in the questionnaire were close ended. It was more comprehensive for Hong Kong residents to finish the questionnaire within 20 minutes. A 16 paged questionnaire in traditional Chinese was used in this research with English version of the questionnaire for reference. In the ancient times in Asia and Europe, women are often the subjects of slavery. In Japan, once a woman has been married to a man, she no longer free. Her work is just centered on family rearing and farewell assistance to the husband. The only way to escape from the marriage is to commit hara-kiri or the virtue of killing themselves. In the Philippines during the sultanate period, only the son of the king or sultan can inherit the land and women are just for marriage rites and are just means to procreate through pregnancy. The worst thing is that they are not allowed to rule the land. In contrast, Egypt is known to have women rulers before man became the ruler. One good example is Cleopatra who ruled the ancient Egypt and who have man as subordinates (timemagazine. com 1972). But with the rise of industrial revolution, feminists became more gender sensitive and gender equality had been on the rise. Now, there had been widespread gender stereotyping such as female police enforcers, pilots, soldiers, and the existence of working moms and even female engineers. In addition, there is an increase of women politicians and rulers and believe it or not that the Philippines being a democratic republic had some sort of girl power because they had already to female presidents whom actually won through people power revolution. Tracing the history is likewise one way of differentiating man between women based on their family roles and social responsibility. The existence of pluralism in nature allowed varied responsibilities of a man and a woman. Delving deeper in differentiating man and women is through their matter of feelings. Men are thought to be pride and full of ego. Women are the exact opposite as they are more patient and unruffled. Usually in a family a woman/wife is usually the mother of all chores in the house doing all the laundry, cleaning, and preparing food except if a there is a hired nanny, but still a nanny is a woman. On the other hand, those of the man usually sips coffee while reading the daily news and eats the breakfast and then go to work. Going back to the answer of Miss Universe 2008, it would be nice if we cite some examples. Man thinks that the easiest way to get through a point is to go straight. I might as well agree on that. When a man goes to off a particular thing in the department store, he goes exactly to the rack or place where it is located, grabs it and pays it over the counter immediately. Women don’t, they actually took many more time visiting every lane of the shop and fit all things that she thinks it’s nice for her and grabs unnecessary things forgetting what to buy. This only means that man is more straightforward on everything. When he wants an answer, he wants it immediately. When he takes orders in a restaurant, he wants it in a brisk. Women are more patient and complicated, they are the ones who usually start the husband-wife fight because of their hasty tongue who usually nags and nags until both of them gets pissed off. Among all of these opposite characters, I still view man as being a yin and a yang, a perfect opposite but a perfect combination. Every imperfection of a man can be complemented by a woman and every woman’s flaw is complemented by a man. That is why there is the existence of marriage, to unite both the ideals of a man and a woman and to live together as one body and being separate entities. A man and a woman are created complementary to work and help each other. Each sex/gender represents a function in a society. There has been a saying that â€Å"No man is an island†. Question: Describe about the Following Vocabulary : Word Walk Word Wall Technology Teaching Answer: Word Walk Grade Level- Kindergarten English Language Art Standard- Vocabulary Content Development: 1.4 Distinguish and interpret words with multiple meanings Objective- The shared reading enables the children to enhance their vocabulary stocks. The repetition of the readings along with explanation of individual words enables the children to remember the words more distinctly. Instruction regarding specific word its multiple uses helps the children to understand the word and its other meaning clearly. (Zheng, 2012) Materials- A board and several board pins are required. Paper cut outs to write down different words that are used in the text. Instructional procedure- One of the first steps to initiate a word walk activity is to select appropriate text and recognize suitable words. The teacher next must introduce a particular word or set of words for children to learn. There are three steps of word walk- before reading, during reading and after reading. (Schmitt, 2000) Before reading- the teacher must introduce words written on paper cut outs along with pictures of the objects. In this regard the teacher can introduce picture cards of bugs, worm, plants, mantis and spider. Here the teacher must emphasize on a single word say in this poem, we can select the word rich. This word is chosen because it has more than one meaning. The teacher says the word and asks the children to repeat it. Then the teacher asks the children to listen to the text and recognize the word rich. During reading- the teacher while reading aloud the text should pause when the word is encountered and alerts the children to recognize the word. Then the teacher must write down the word on the paper cut out and stick it on the board by a board pin. Then she should explain the meaning of the word. In this case, rich means having lots of money or assets. After reading- the teacher reintroduces other words like bug, worm, spider and mantis along with the picture card. Teacher then asks the student to repeat the words and explains all their meanings. The teacher then must make use of the word outside the context of the poem and the explain the other meaning of the same word like rich means existing in plenty and define a sentence with this meaning. (Beauchat, Blamey and Walpole, 2010) Evaluation- The teacher must engage the student in some word games, crossword puzzle etc. to evaluate the learning of the student. The student can be asked to write the down the words learnt on the paper cut outs. The rest of the students must stand behind each student sitting down. The teacher then flashes paper cutouts of words written on it. This website provides a wide range of word games like unscramble, Hangmouse etc. The game Unscramble help the children to identify a correct word from an unscramble word and win points. The game Hangmouse help the students to guess a word from the meaning of the word provided as hint. The game will provide certain letters which can be used to form the word. For every failure to form the word the game will get over and on correct formation of the word, scores will be assigned to the children. The children with maximum score will win the game. The Color Purple - The Struggle to Express Themselves There is one primordial reason why we do not doubt Europeans have taken the lead in history, in all epochs before and after 1492, and it has little to do with evidence. It is a basic belief which we inherit from prior ages of thought and scarcely realize that we hold: it is an implicit belief, not an explicit one, and it is so large a theory that it is woven into all of our ideas about history, both within Europe and without. . . (Blaut pg. 6-7). African-American people have had to climb over many obstacles to get to their position today. First, was the selling of their people into slavery. Then, they endured slavery itself, being treated like an animal. After slavery was abolished, Colored people still had to deal with racial discrimination and hatred. If this sounds rough, black women had it worse. African-American women had to deal with all the previously mentioned things, but they were women too! Females were oppressed almost as bad as the blacks. White women were not able to vote until the 1920. Therefore colored women had a double edged sword, they had to fight for freedom, but not be to dominate as to effect the men. Alice Walker's The Color Purple is a good example of colored women's plight. Three obstacles black women had to overcome to be able to express themselves were Racism, the lack of education, and the stereo-type that women are inferior. African-Americans have always experienced racism throughout their habitation in America. Slavery, is what caused most of the hatred towards blacks. African Americans were sold by their people and sent off to a foreign land. Colored people were used as work horses when they entered America. "It was acceptable for a white person to be lazy (in the South), and therefore, a white person takes advantage of this" (Theriault). White people wanted to keep their laziness. If the slaves were set free, then the whites would have to do more work. The slaves still fought for what they wanted, and finally won their "independence." Another dilemma was "if the south could abolish slavery, what would happen to the slaves? These slaves have been slaves for all their lives and would require education. These slaves would also require homes, some type of compensation, and more" (Theriault). Blacks were put in prison for rebelling against the white establishment. Most times these crimes were minuscule in comparison to the crimes committed against blacks or by whites. A colored person could be put in jail for looking at someone inappropriately, but if a black man was lynched, nothing happened. "I have been locked by the lawless. Handcuffed by the haters. Gagged by the greedy. And, if I know any thing at all, it's that a wall is just a wall and nothing more at all. It can be broken down" (Shakuer). This excerpt from "Affirmation" is an example of the feelings of hatred for the Whites. However, this quotation also shows the fight in the African-American race let alone its women. If the South could have kept education away from the blacks. Then ides as the one above would have never been published. Lack of education was a way the South tried to keep the blacks in a lower class. In The Color Purple, Celie is not allowed to go to school because she is to be kept barefoot and pregnant. She still received an education by learning what her little sister was teaching her, though. It was believed that if the blacks were kept uneducated then they would not know any better and would not fight for freedom. Unfortunately, for the South, the North was educating their blacks. Then these blacks were coming south and starting colleges for colored people. Booker T. Washington wrote, in his autobiography, ONE day, while at work in the coal-mine, I happened to overhear two miners talking about a great school for coloured people somewhere in Virginia. There is always that friend looking to demonstrate the fabulous world of Cutco Cutlery or the Mary Kay lady who is always having a party. But what is one’s cost for signing up to be a distributor for these companies, and are you ever able to enjoy the blatantly materialistic life that is offered to you by getting on board? The legality of either a pyramid scheme or a MLM program is not really the question. The real issue resides in the moral and ethically questionable behavior that is encouraged by the founders of these organizations. Greed is used as bait for those looking to get rich quick. This unbridled greed simply makes for bad judgment. MLMs seduce their members into putting aside their own values to promote the blatant values of the company. All of these scams involve meetings to motivate the representative into pressuring their friends and family into hearing the pitch. For years the classic Cutco opening line has been â€Å"Oh, I am not trying to sell you anything. I am just very new to direct sales and would love a chance to practice my presentation.† Who can say no to their struggling friend or family member who is asking for a chance to practice their sales skills on you? Furthermore this demonstrates the level of manipulation that is involved in learning the craft of MLM. The flip-side of these peer pressure ridden motivational meetings is that all other areas of an MLM are extremely loose and flexible. However, because these organizations have such a loose structure there is too much room for both misinformation and product claims that are simply not true. So why would a reputable company want to have such room for abuse associated with their name? One could argue that an MLM is simply a machine for exploiting personal friendships and family relationships for corporate gain. MLMs have their own unique sales techniques that often involve slander, rumors, defamation, and of course â€Å"studies† done by unknown scientists that backup all of these outrageous claims. The most publicly known case of slander was in 1991 when Procter and Gamble filed charges against the Amway Corporation and some of its distributors. Amway was found guilty for spreading rumors to the effect that PG, maker of familiar household products such as Mr. Clean and Tide laundry detergent, is affiliated with the Church of Satan. Even though PG won the case, these rumors are still alive in Amway folklore. Another ethically questionable practice by MLMs is the worship-like behavior seen towards the founders of these organizations. The manner in which these people are depicted in their corporate materials almost portrays them in the same light as our founding fathers. These iconic images attempt to express the ideals most often associated with those individuals who have gained success through hard, honest work. It is easy to swoon in admiration of such powerful and visionary people dedicated to bringing these wonderful opportunities to the common American. Perhaps though, it is just an elaborate smoke and mirrors trick created to motivate the down line. In most cultures throughout the world it is believed that misleading people in order to get their money is morally wrong. Pyramid schemes are illegal because they are exploitative and dishonest. They exploit the most vulnerable, desperate, and ignorant people. But add a product to the pyramid scheme, call it an MLM, and people are willing to hear the sales pitch. As a general rule when things are too good to be true, they generally are. Recovery-watch Recovery-watch Last month we announced the launch of our index tracking the use of the words green shoots and recovery in the newspapers. So where are the press putting us now? Junes references to recovery actually topped Mays (1323 compared to 1185), while green shoots held steady. Merely counting these key words wont give you the entire story, of course. The articles focuses have largely switched, from the general publics need to put faith into the markets and their restoration to the Governments failure to do what they must. The push for positive attitudes is making way for renewed caution and uncertainty, though the Independent (arguably the most optimistic paper) whisper[s] about forecasts of mild global recovery in 2010. In fact, according to the Times, optimism itself may now be a taboo word (and attitude) for public figures to admit to. The paper reminded us early this month about the derision faced by Treasury Minister Baroness Vadera for claiming she believed green shoots were visible back in January. (To be fair though, she walked straight into a trap laid by Sky News, who fed her the term and asked her to respond.) This might go some way towards explaining the Governments cautious attitude of late.

In addition, Lincoln highlighted Douglass’s expansion plans of splitting the controversial regions and introducing Kansas as new territory. After outlining a brief history of the issue, Lincoln progressed to present his anti-slavery views. According to him, the Negroes were equally human and deserved a fair chance in the government as well (268). He objected Douglass’s views that only the whites had a right to form the government. For example, in a department store, there may be merchandisers for menswear, women’s wear, children’s wear etc. the basic duties of the merchandiser can be divided into four areas: planning, directing, co-coordinating and controlling. Planning: Though the merchandisers may not be directly involved in the actual purchase of merchandise, they formulate the policies for the areas in which they are responsible. Forecasting sales for the forthcoming budget period is required and this involves estimating consumer demand and the impact of changes in the retail environment. The sales forecasts are then translated into budgets to help the buyers work within the financial guidelines. Directing: Guiding and training buyers as and when the need arises is also function of the merchandiser. Many a times, the buyers have to be guided to take additional markdowns for products which may not be doing to well in the stores. Inspiring commitment and performance in the part of the buyers is necessary. Coordinating: Usually, merchandise managers supervise the work of more than one buyer, hence they need to coordinate the buying effort in terms of how well it fits in with the store image and with the other products being bought by other buyers. Controlling: Assessing not only the merchandise performance, but also the buyer’s performance is part of the merchandise manager’s job. Buying performance may be evaluated on the basis of net sales maintained mark up percentages, mark down percentages, gross margin percentages and stock turn. This is necessary to provide control and maintain high performance results. As a key aspect of merchandising involves selection of merchandise or products to be sold in the retail store, the job of the merchandiser also involves visits to suppliers or manufacturers of select goods. This is likely to involve working closely with retail buyers. They negotiate a price, order the goods, agree on a delivery date, complete all the necessary paperwork, and keep in ouch with suppliers to make sure that the goods arrive on time. Merchandisers work closely with the visual display staff and department managers to decide how goods should be displayed to best attract customers’ attention. This might involve planning and setting up sales promotions and advertising campaign. In some organizations, this is a separate role carried out by a visual merchandiser. Merchandiser may also travel to different stores to actually check the response to various items in the merchandise. To enjoy working as a merchandiser, it is essential that the individual has a mathematical ability to work out budgets and understand sales figures. He/she should be able to understand what the customer wants and translate that into specific products. The ability to work in a team is also essential, as the merchandiser would have a team of buyers reporting to him / her. Many retail organizations also have a Divisional Merchandise Manager (DMM) or similar position, wherein the person would be responsible for merchandising activities for particular liens of merchandise. For example, the children’s wear DMM supervises those buyers who purchase merchandise such as baby clothes, clothes for new born, clothes for boys, clothes for girls and accessories. Typically, the role of a divisional merchandise manager, immaterial of the size of the retail organization, would involve the following functions: 1) Forecasting sales for the forthcoming budget period: This involves estimating consumer demand and the impact of changes in the retail environment. 2) Translating the sales forecast into inventory levels in terms of rupees. The existence of large corporations has become a way of life for most of us. We have grown up around these companies as they have come to dominate our lives. These large corporations have taken over many facets of our lives. The purchasing power of large corporations has given them an unprecedented degree of power over many aspects of our lives. â€Å"They determine what we eat, what we watch, what we wear, where we work and what we do.†(Bakan,5). Corporations, who are not considered humans, are raising our children and dictating what is eaten, bought, worn and what is cared about. In times gone by, humans were shaped by their family and culture but now we are manipulated and shaped by zealous marketers whose definitive goal is to maximize profits with a total disregard to any social responsibility. There is, however, a growing trend of corporations who engage in community work and are enthusiastic on protecting the environment. â€Å"IKEA focuses heavily on sustaina ble forestry as you would expect from a furniture supplier that uses a lot of wood and is changing the lives of 80,000 children which is still a big accomplishment.† (Barner, 59-60). Ultimately, the employees of such corporations as well as the consumer of these companies want to actively participate in the social responsibility initiatives of the corporation they work and buy from. Corporations, through the use of their excessive marketing strategies and with relatively little risk placed upon them, corporations are able to project their power and influence on society as a whole as well as upon all aspects of governments. Freedom of Information Act 1982 is entirely in the interest of public who can have access to various documents of government of Victoria and its public agencies for verification or for any other useful purpose.   The sole objective of FOI Act is to bring awareness among public whether the functioning and operations of government are in order   and how public analyze the same. Section 22 provides about the charges to be paid for having access to specific documents.   The section provides technical details of payment of fee that is calculated with time that is taken for search of documents.   This is particularly due to the fact that   the time taken for search of documents may vary depending on the date of publication of document. This is also in order to reduce the payment of fee to be paid by public.   All sectors of public may not afford to pay high rate of fees for having access to government documents.   In view of such as these reasons, hourly rate and time taken for search of documents has been included in this section. The section also covers transcription (h)   and routine requests (g)   and in case of inspection of documents no charge shall be calculated (f) in pursuance of Section 8(1) or 11(1). Section 27 clearly states about reasons of refusal of documents by a Minister of state to that effect, applicant shall be informed about the reasons in writing.   This section is somewhat complicated with the fact that a minister or a government official is a servant of public and with that motive, public must be provided access to the documents which is the sole purpose of FOI Act. This section is likely to give rise to conflicts between and may bring a deep dissatisfaction to public. Some of the documents that contain health information are also restricted with the provisions of Health   Records Act 2001, which of these reasons are also to be stated to applicant.   Although there are clauses for applying of review of decisions, launch complain to Ombudsmen, it is both time consuming and   undecisive for applicants to move further with such grievances. Section 50 deals with applications for review which would be pending with Tribunal for decisions.   This may pertain to a request for document, charge made, decision for access, or any other specific request regarding information under FOI Act.  Ã‚  Ã‚   The Tribunal in all respects has to deal with each individual case, giving its due importance of provisions along with genuine reasons. Those issues or requests for documents which were not considered by Minister, are very well resolved at Tribunal by applicants. Section 51 states that an applicant may apply to Principal officer or Minister for review of decision, which was given in the deemed absence within 28 days   for review of decision or refusing to give access to health documents as per Section 36 of Health Records Act 2001. This section offers powers and opportunities to public   for   reconsideration of requests for having access to documents.   Applicants have to be excessively vigilant in deriving the maximum benefit from the government bodies and officials.  Ã‚  Ã‚   This section is both useful for public and for principal officers to check the veracity of facts in all respects. Section 51A  Ã‚  Ã‚   deals with conciliation of Health Service Commissioner   which state that issues that were deferring in Section 50 and 51 in the matters of health documents, may suitably be taken up by applicant with this section and apply for Health Service Commissioner’s decision.   In case Health Service Commissioner fails to conciliate a request, to that effect an notice in writing must be issued to both applicant and Principal Officer. This appears as a last resort for applicant as the decision of Health Service Commissioner is the final approach for an applicant. Conclusion The enactment of FOI is made with a view of regularizing the functioning and to increase the   working efficiency of governments.   Apart from this fact, the public are also provided an in-depth knowledge about information and working status of governments. Although there are many technicalities involved in FOI Act, each section, sub-section and clause, a significance of reason is attached to it for the benefit of both public and governing bodies.

Blockbusters and Star Wars Essay

If one views the top grossing films of all time, it becomes easy to see that most of the films rely heavily on computer generated images, whether to enhance live action or the animation of popular animated features. Many cinematic experts cite the fact that blockbusters in the last thirty years have relied increasingly on special effects to the point that they overshadow the plot, which in essence becomes superfluous. However, this is hardly the case, and most blockbuster films feature plotlines and ideologies that date back to the earliest days of cinema when special effects were scarce. One of the most popular film franchises in history, Star Wars contains not only special effects that helped change movie making, but it also features a plot with many of the same elements as classic western films, including the ideological battle of good versus evil, the wild frontier, and archetypal characters. In the first few years of its existence, cinema was nothing more than a novelty that possessed little artistic value. The idea of moving images was more than enough to attract audiences, though like all novelties, the public would soon grow weary of the invention without the efforts of men like Edwin S. Porter. Undoubtedly, Porter can be said to be the creator of the first blockbuster in movie history, with 1903’s The Great Train Robbery. The film advanced filmmaking in many regards, as not only the first western, but also by incorporating action, violence, frontier humor, color, special effects, and a full-screen closeup of a bandit firing his pistol at the audience. While a short film featuring only one reel of action, it soon led to the proliferation of the nickelodeon as the most popular and commercially successful film of the pre-nickelodeon era, establishing the idea that film could be a commercially-viable medium. This realization that films could make money would eventually become the driving force behind the Hollywood film industry, and the conventions of the western would serve as the perfect template for plots to the present day. When the Hollywood studio system emerged in the 1910s and 1920s, films were produced much in the way of automobiles, with an assembly line mentality and factory-based production operations that allowed the studios to dominate the movie industry in the U. S. and abroad. The impact of the western formula on the success of film was apparent and by the mid-1920s, nearly half of Universal Studio’s annual output of feature films was westerns. After remaining the most profitable genre of film for decades, by the 1960s the western had peaked both as a viable Hollywood commodity and as a national myth to ease America’s rural-urban transformation, in part brought low by a combination of market saturation and generic exhaustion. However, many of its familiar conventions would find their way into the plots of some of the biggest blockbusters in history. Over seventy years after Porter’s blockbuster, George Lucas would also change the face of cinema, relying on the basic plot techniques developed through the evolution of the western. Stars Wars is credited as ushering in not only the era of dominating special effects, but also remains one of the highest grossing blockbusters of all time, with a worldwide box office take of $797,000,000, not to mention another few billion from its subsequent sequels and prequels. While Star Wars contains amazing artistry in the scale and scope of its special effects, its plot still relies on the simple conventions of the western film, which are designed to be accessible to all audiences. Often considered the first blockbuster to star one of cinema’s greatest icons, John Wayne, the film Stagecoach is an adult drama that had deep roots and moral lessons that helped make it a timeless classic, whose plot is about a group of strangers thrown together on a journey and put under stress so that the strengths and weaknesses of the character within them is revealed; this same basic formula has been seen in blockbuster films like Apollo 13 and the biggest blockbuster in history, Titanic. While both of these later films are heavy with special effects, they feature these proven plot techniques, much like Star Wars. The first time viewers see the heroic Luke Skywalker in Star Wars, it almost looks like a scene from a western. The classic desert landscape, the flat, expansive land and the big sky are all classic icons of the western genre. It is this vastness that is a key characteristic in Star Wars and westerns. Specific settings for westerns include lonely isolated forts, the isolated homestead, the jail, or small frontier towns that are forming at the edges of civilization. Luke, much like the young heroes of westerns, yearns only to get off the farm and lead a life of greater excitement. It is only when the Empire storms through and kills his family is he forced to become a man and take on the evil forces conspired against him. Usually, the central plot of the western film is the classic, simple goal of maintaining law and order on the frontier in a fast-paced action story: â€Å"It is normally rooted in archetypal conflict – good vs. bad, virtue vs. evil, white hat vs. black hat†¦ Often the hero of a western meets his opposite â€Å"double,† a mirror of his own evil side that he has to destroy† (Dirks). For Luke, the good, his opposition is Darth Vader, the evil. This point is even illustrated by the color of the clothing they wear, as Luke dresses in white and Vader is decked out in ominous black. This element of good versus evil, or white hat versus black hat is a key to western films and make it easy for viewers to delineate between good characters and bad characters is traditionally easy in conventional western movies. There is little question as to who the good guys and bad guys are. And, this is even seen in Luke’s sister, Leia, who begins the movie wearing an all-white dress. The white clothing of Luke and Leia link them through their apparent goodness, even though it is not revealed until later that they are brother and sister. The only character that is seen in both white and black is Han Solo, who wears a white shirt with a black vest. Unlike Luke and Leia, Han has elements of mischief and is also an outlaw. The white shirt signifies his goodness, while the black vest hints of his less than admirable qualities–his greed, selfishness, and willingness to deal with shady characters. When Han is introduced into the movie, he kills an alien within the first few minutes. According to author Stephen D. Greydanus, this scene is typical of western films: â€Å"The saloon shootouts, of course, come from that other great American mythology, the Western. (So does Han Solo’s general cowboy look and demeanor. ) By the 1970s, though, the Western no longer enjoyed the hold on the popular imagination it once had, though its influence has continued to be felt in films [like] Star Wars†. With all the element of classic westerns, including cowboy-type characters, evil villains, and a plot filled with action, it would only seem appropriate that Star Wars also possessed a classic theme, as many popular westerns do. However, Han’s goodness is finally known and he becomes one of the rebels’ greatest assets and is one of the movie’s best examples of a western style cowboy. While Star Wars could be considered a western set in space, it certainly possesses more elements and intricacies of plot than are given credit. While none of the conventions are new, they helped infuse the modern blockbuster with the spirit of old Hollywood, to very profitable results. A few true westerns have become blockbusters in the past thirty years, most notably Dances with Wolves, which grossed $424,200,000 worldwide, and featured many of the same elements as Star Wars, including good versus evil, the encroaching omnipresent technological power, and the perseverant hero. Ironically, Dances With Wolves even won the Academy Award for best film, beating out the film Goodfellas, which actually ended with an homage to Edwin S. Porter’s original western; it featured one of the most sinister mobsters in the movie shooting his gun directly at the audience at the end of the film, almost exactly duplicating the ending of Porter’s film. This just goes to show that regardless of what genre today’s Hollywood blockbusters fall under, the plot elements of the American western permeate most, from the simple battle of good versus evil to the ultimate victory enjoyed by the pure-hearted hero. Scatterplot

Scatterplot graphs may not mean much to most people, but to an educated statistician, or a trained psychoanalyst, a scatterplott graph can tell a person much more than meets the eye. A scatterplot graph allows us to take two separate sets of data, and use a graph to compare and contrast them. If one wanted to show the correlation between two different test scores, they could simply plot the scores on the graph, and either see and immediate correlation, or see that the two are totally not connected in any way. Statistics help us see things that we could normally miss very easily. Using scatterplot graphs properly can show significant consistencies in many things. Graphs like this help show the actual extent to which two things relate. In psychology, this is a very important tool. Psychoanalysts can use scatterplot information in many ways. First, anytime two tests are given, it allows doctors and teachers alike to see if there are consistencies in test scores. This can prove to be a very useful tool. For example, if there is a correlation between SAT scores and LSAT scores, then you can say that a student who does better on his or her SAT is more likely to do better on his or her LSAT also. This may not always tell the exact truth, but assumptions can go a long way. By using a graph format, we can see consistencies and correlations much easier than if we were just looking at a list of data. The main advantage of using a scatterplot graph is that two things which would ordinarily not have any correlation to one another may have more correlation than expected. This means, that from the graph, a person has the ability to find out things that they were not even necessarily looking for Scatterplot graphs also allow a psychoanalyst to predict what will happen in the future. How to Read a Meniscus in Lab Measurements The meniscus is the curve seen at the top of a liquid in response to its container. The meniscus can be either concave or convex, depending on the surface tension of the liquid and adhesion to the wall of the container. A concave meniscus occurs when the molecules of the liquid are more strongly attracted to the container than to each other. The liquid appears to stick to the edge of the container. Most liquids, including water, present a concave meniscus. A convex meniscus (sometimes called a backwards meniscus) is produced when the molecules of the liquid are more strongly attracted to each other than to the container. A good example of this shape of meniscus may be seen with mercury in a glass container. In some cases, the meniscus appears flat (e.g., water in some plastics). This makes taking measurements easy! How to Take Measurements With a Meniscus When you read a scale on the side of a container with a meniscus, such as a graduated cylinder or volumetric flask, its important that the measurement accounts for the meniscus. Measure so that the line you are reading is even with the center of the meniscus. For water and most liquids, this is the bottom of the meniscus. For mercury, take the measurement from the top of the meniscus. In either case, you are measuring based on the center of the meniscus. For a flat meniscus, make sure the liquid is level. Usually placing the container on a lab bench does the trick. You wont be able to take an accurate reading looking up at the liquid level or down into it. Get eye-level with the meniscus. You can either pick up the glassware to bring it up to your level or else bend down to take measurements in situations where youre concerned with dropping the container or spilling its contents. Use the same method to take measurements each time so that any errors you make will be consistent. Fun Fact: The word meniscus comes from the Greek word for crescent.
